The built-in backup in Lightroom makes a backup of your catalog file only. You must make backups of your photos using some other method, preferably a third-party automated tool.
The folder with your catalog also contains previews, and these are not backed up (they do not need to be backed up), and so it should be bigger than the folder with the backup.
