If the behavior still persists after eliminating the precomp, you have other issues.
I tried scaling without precomposing. Here's the deal:
The second layer is a blue copy of the text for the look I want. Though it's possible to scale both layers with identical keyframes, the relative size of the offset between the two layers does not scale the way it does when they are first precomped.
Additionally, precomposing saved the trouble of centering the center point so that the text scales from the proper point. The default center is at the baseline of the text, which is not what I want. I know that's a minor issue, but every minute adds up, and I was already precomping for the reason above.
